Cataracts involve clouding or opacification of the eye’s natural lens, called the “crystalline lens”. This lens is located inside the eye behind the iris, the coloured portion of the pupil (see picture of eye). Several factors can contribute to the development of cataracts, including age, heredity, medication and the environment. With age, the natural lens slowly becomes yellowed and hazy. The light that passes through a cataracted lens is not clearly focused. Cataracts can be removed through an intraocular surgical procedure that allows treating the condition permanently.
