Pink eye (conjunctivitis)

Pink eye refers to a group of diseases characterized by inflammation, itching, a burning sensation and redness of the conjunctiva, which is the protective membrane covering the exposed areas of the sclera, commonly known as “the white of the eye”. Conjunctivitis can spread from one person to another. It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, allergens, environmental irritants, contact lens products, and eye drops. In general, bacterial conjunctivitis is more common in children and viral conjunctivitis is more common in adults. Most of the time, the infection typically resolves on its own, but more serious forms of conjunctivitis (e.g., Chlamydia) require treatment.
