The aspherical intraocular lens (IOL) gets its name from the design of its optical part, that is, the part where the strength of the lens is located. Like the lenses of prescription eyeglasses, the asphericity of the IOL results in less aberration than a spherical design. This increases the accuracy of details and reduces the perception of halos around light sources, especially at night. Moreover, this IOL is composed of a single piece of acrylic. This feature facilitates the implantation and positioning of the IOL in the crystalline lens capsule. The physical caracteristics of this lens reduce the risk of capsular bag opacification. Usually, this type of IOL requires reading glasses to see up close and does not correct astigmatism. It is not covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan.
