Any multitude of foreign bodies can accidently lodge themselves in the eye and cause damage. If such a foreign body is removed within days, the consequences are usually not serious. Anesthetic drops are applied to the eye and the foreign body is removed with pliers. A tool similar to a rotary cutter is used to remove any residual rust, if needed. Particles travelling at high speed can enter the eye and cause a perforation. Such cases are treated as surgical emergencies.
