Botox (botulinum toxin) can be injected for therapeutic purposes when a patient suffers from abnormal and uncomfortable muscular contractions. Botox is a pharmacological substance that paralyzes muscles. The use of Botox can be indicated to treat cases of blepharospasm (involuntary contraction, resulting in the tight closure of both eyes) and facial hemispasm (spasmodic contraction of facial muscles). As its action is temporary, lasting approximately four to six months, repeated injections are necessary to maintain its effects. It is also used in cosmetic surgery to reduce the appearance of wrinkles due to the contraction of facial muscles.
