Refraction

In addition to its role of protecting the eye, the cornea plays an important role in the refraction of light. The cornea is one of the parts of the eye with the lens that allows for convergence of light rays on the retina. An over curved cornea can cause myopia and oppositely a too flat cornea may cause hyperopia . When the cornea is not perfectly spherical, it causes astigmatism. The cornea is the first structure that light strikes before reaching the retina. So that the refraction is done properly, it is necessary that the cornea is clear and smooth.
