Diagnostic imaging tests are used to assess the structure of the optic nerve and determine where the disease lies. The layer of nerve fibres of the retina transmits the visual information from the retina to the brain. The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and the Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT) are two diagnostic imaging devices that allow direct and accurate tracking of glaucoma as it evolves over time. The progression observed from one appointment to the next is as important as the results of a unique test. These two devices use different methods to gauge the thickness of the nerve fibres that make up the optic nerve.
