Surgery is used when medical treatment, whether drops or laser, fails. Various surgical procedures can be considered according to the type of glaucoma. These include minimally invasive procedures (iStents, Trabectome, ECP), filtering procedures (trabeculectomy, non-penetrative procedures, deep sclerectomy, canaloplasty), drainage implants (Ahmed, Baerveltd, ExPress, Gold shunt) and cyclodestruction. The aim of these procedures is to lower intraocular pressure. They cannot repair existing injuries; instead they serve to stabilize the patient’s condition and prevent further loss. Moreover, all of these procedures can be combined with cataract surgery.
