The visual field test allows detecting and monitoring the progression of glaucoma. Untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. Visual field impairment can occur several years after the onset of glaucoma. It is generally recognized that in the presence of a visual field impairment (functional damage), 50% of the optic nerve is already damaged by the illness (structural damage). This is why it is important to detect and monitor the disease using instruments that pick up the damage at an earlier stage (see under “Diagnostic imaging”).
