Lacrimal plugs are used to increase the volume of tears inside the inferior cul-de-sac of the eye. These are inserted in the lacrimal points (see under “Lacrimal dilation”) to prevent tears from leaving the eye naturally. The procedure is used to treat eye dryness. Generally, temporary plugs will be used at first to assess the patient’s comfort. These are made of collagen and dissolve gradually. If results are positive, permanent plugs can then be inserted.
